BUFFALO, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Buffalo Bills have broken ground on their new home in Orchard Park.

State and local officials were on hand to mark the start of construction of the $1.54 billion state of the art, 60,000 seat stadium. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, a native Western New Yorker, was also in attendance for the announcement.

“As a Western New York kid, it gives me a great deal of pride to be here today,” said Goodell. “I’ve been to a lot of groundbreaking ceremonies in my time at the NFL, but none of them are more meaningful than being here today. They deserve an extraordinary stadium, and you’re going to get it. And I think as Western New Yorkers, we’ll all be proud. It’ll be not only a great stadium but filled with incredible fans.”

However, with the creation of 10,000 union construction jobs through the Project Labor Agreement and an estimated 30-year economic impact worth $1.6 billion, Governor Kathy Hochul said this is about more than football.

“As a native Buffalonian and life-long Bills fan, I know how much this team means to this city and region as a whole,” said Hochul. “As we break ground on a beautiful new stadium, we’re celebrating a new era for this region and for tens of thousands of New Yorkers who stand to benefit.”

The new stadium represents the largest economic development project in Western New York History. It’s expected to be complete in 2026.
