ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) is asking for input about a new four-legged member of the team.

TCSO is adding a drug detection K-9 officer thanks to a donation from a non-profit organization called The Sean Walsh K9 Memorial Foundation. The foundation was started by Walsh’s friends and family after he was killed serving overseas to honor his memory. Walsh dreamt of becoming a K-9 Handler after his service. TCSO found the pictured pup at Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.

TCSO is asking the community to weigh in on what the one-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer should be named. There are four names with local ties to choose from: Myers, Finch, Rogue, and Trip. The canine and his handler, Deputy Kenney, will soon begin the Narcotics Detection certification process. Authorities say the dog will be trained in passive detection alert and will not be cross-trained in bite or apprehension work. Authorities say the pair could be ready for patrol in April 2024.
