CAYUGA HEIGHTS, NY (607NewsNow) — A Tompkins County village might say farewell to Flock Safety cameras.

Trustees in Cayuga Heights are considering letting the village’s contract with Flock expire in late September. The village currently operates four of the security company’s cameras, all of which read license plates.

During a meeting on May 20, Cayuga Heights Police Chief Jerry Wright called the cameras “extremely useful.” Wright also said he understands and respects the concerns regarding Flock’s data privacy.

Earlier this year, privacy concerns led Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca to terminate their contracts with Flock. Ithaca Alderperson Patrick Kuehl also cited the need to get “mass surveillance” out of the community.

Lawmakers in Cayuga Heights are expected to vote on renewing the village’s contract with Flock tonight. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Marcham Hall.
