SYRACUSE, NY (607NewsNow) — A 22-year-old Cornell student faces a weapons charge at Syracuse University.

Police say a rifle and ammunition were recovered Saturday, March 7 following the arrest of Mateu Healey-Parera. The Cornell undergrad is charged with felony possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin said Monday there’s no threat to the public, and added investigators are trying to determine why he traveled on a bus from Ithaca to Syracuse. The rifle recovered by Syracuse Police officers included a scope typically used for hunting, Rusin said.

“We appreciate the swift action of the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety and the city of Syracuse Police Department, which is coordinating the investigation with multiple local and regional agencies, the Cornell University Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Cornell Vice President for University Relations Kyle Kimball said.

“We are deeply concerned by this incident and extend our support to the entire Syracuse University community,” Kimball added.

Healey-Parera is being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center on 50 thousand dollars cash bail.
