CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – Local nonprofits are getting support to fight food insecurity.

On November 24, State Senator Lea Webb announced $100,000 in Local Emergency Food Relief Equipment grants for groups.

In Cortland, Seven Valleys Health Coalition was awarded $56,000 to purchase a pickup truck with a bed topper and three insulated food storage containers. It will help expand the Seven Valleys Food Rescue and Produce Prescription programs.

Catholic Charities of Tompkins and Tioga Counties will receive $10,500 for two generators. The new equipment will help preserve fresh food donations for the group’s emergency food pantry and feeding programs, which aid residents during power outages and disasters.

“These grants represent a critical investment in the infrastructure that supports food security in our state,” said Webb. “By providing organizations with the equipment they need to safely store, transport, and distribute food, we are strengthening our emergency response capacity and expanding access for the most vulnerable.”

The money comes from the NYS Environmental Protection Fund and is distributed by the DEC. Catholic Charities of Broome County and the Broome County Council of Churches also received awards.
