OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – Nearly $290,000 is headed to Tioga County.

The Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District has received financial support to help five farms improve water quality in the Owego-Wappasening and Upper Susquehanna Watersheds.

At one farm, the money will be used to construct stormwater retention basins, establish a riparian forest buffer along streams and wetlands, and implement a prescribed rotational grazing system.

At four other farms, the funding will support planning to improve soil health and decrease the threat of runoff water, as well as the reduction of phosphorus and nitrogen fed to livestock.

It’s part of $25 million recently announced for similar projects across the state, including Tompkins and Cortland Counties.
